The Tyne Tunnel’s northbound side will stay closed weekends. Maintenance work now goes into summer 2025. TT2 Limited manages the Tyne Tunnel, and they understand this closure is inconvenient.

Since June 2024, the northbound tunnel has shut weekends. The closure lasts from Friday 8 PM to Monday 6 AM. Drivers used the southbound tunnel for both directions, with one lane north and one south.

TT2 started managing the tunnel in 2007 during the second tunnel’s building. They also refurbished the first tunnel then. Regular maintenance is a must for the tunnels.

Drivers now know the work is extended again. TT2 Limited said the work will continue, with northbound tunnel weekend work running until summer 2025.

The tunnels are important for everyone’s travel. Maintenance keeps the tunnels in great shape. Projects like this can take more time sometimes. TT2 wants safe and reliable tunnels always. Authorities get the tunnels back in 2037.

This work happens on weekends when traffic is less than weekdays. This reduces disruption for everyone driving. They know it’s inconvenient for weekend trips, so drivers should try to plan for off-peak times.

TT2 works closely with contractors to finish quickly. The tunnels’ safety is most important to them. They appreciate everyone’s patience as work continues. Tunnels work normally Monday through Friday.
