Someone discovered a mortar in a river. This happened in Wanlockhead, Dumfries and Galloway. The person found it on Monday afternoon. It was a World War Two explosive.

Police were alerted to the discovery. This village is the highest in Scotland. Bomb disposal experts came to deal with it. They did a controlled explosion Tuesday.

Police said they got the report around 3:40 pm. This was on Monday, March 17. The device was in a stream. An exclusion zone was established for safety.

The controlled explosion occurred around 8 am. This was on Tuesday, March 18. Then, they removed the exclusion zone. Police think the mortar dates back to World War Two.

The Wanlockhead Inn shared a photo online, people believed it was a mortar round. Wanlockhead sits 467m above sea level. Gold panning is a common activity in Wanlock Water.

Another explosive device was found recently in Dumfries and Galloway. Last month, they blew up a bomb. A person found it on Sandyhills beach. It was also from World War Two.
