A massive regeneration plan is approved for Wolverhampton, adding over 1,000 homes and new businesses to the city center.

The plan includes up to 1,070 homes. New shops, bars, and restaurants are also planned, and they also want to revamp the main square.
The area near the ring road gets a new name: Smithgate, honoring metalworks. Planners backed the scheme and approved the first phase of the work. This includes 300 flats on Peel Street’s old market site, as well as the area around Market Square. Work could begin later in the year.
The project involves several groups, including the City Council and Homes England, who will work together. They’ll create a new area with homes and businesses. Smithgate reflects the city’s history and will be a new gateway to Wolverhampton.
Smithgate will put people downtown and offer new homes and places to eat. This should help the economy and meet housing needs. It will also make a friendly space. The city will help find funding to help deliver this project.
The old market site has been empty since 2017. A boxpark was once planned for this area, but the shipping container venue got delayed. The council is now looking for a better location.
