Gas leak prompts road closure and evacuations in Westminster. Repairs expected to last the weekend.

The gas leak occurred on Great Peter Street, near St Ann’s Street. Cadent, the gas emergency service, arrived Thursday evening and work went on all night long.
A Cadent person said they found the leak and had to evacuate six places for safety reasons early this morning. The leak is in a big pipe underground, about three meters deep, and repairing it will take a while, they said.
Great Peter Street is now closed, spanning from Monck Street to Marsham Street. Workers are trying to open it quickly, and pedestrians and vehicles must take other routes. Gas supplies haven’t been cut off, luckily.
The people at Cadent want everyone back home safely tonight, though repairs continue all weekend. The Fire Brigade came Friday morning too.
About 150 folks were evacuated from buildings just to be cautious. Firefighters are still there making sure it’s safe, and a 25-metre safety zone is in place with two fire engines helping.
