The Transpennine Route Upgrade costs £11.5 billion. Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy thinks it is vital for the North. He visited the Ravensthorpe site on February 27. West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin joined him. Local kids and TRU apprentices were also there. They buried a time capsule during the visit.

The time capsule celebrates the project’s progress and marks 200 years of modern rail travel. The capsule will stay under a new viaduct for centuries. It holds a letter, a Manchester to York ticket, a local paper, and kids’ railway designs.

Hendy said this project creates opportunity and will improve housing and job access. Ravensthorpe has a large construction site. A new viaduct lets faster trains pass slower ones. The station will move so tracks can double to four, adding train service and capacity.

Huddersfield station is getting a £70m upgrade, with the makeover expected to finish around 2027. Line electrification will continue past that date. They will modernise the station while preserving its history.

Hendy believes the TRU solves service issues and modernizes the railway. It adds train capacity and will electrify lines. Northern’s current service is not good enough, and the government aims to improve it quickly. Regular service is the goal, and Hendy monitors the situation. The investment transforms Pennine travel, improving speed, time, capacity and reliability.

Brabin said the TRU is crucial, linking Manchester and Leeds better. The Ravensthorpe viaduct enables more trains that will be faster and greener. Stopping services will also improve, allowing fast intercity trains. She said this helps grow the economy.

Areas along the line will have better access, allowing kids to reach Leeds, Manchester, and Bradford jobs. Apprentices are proud to build the structure. Engineering in West Yorkshire can handle big projects.

Electric trains run between Manchester and Stalybridge, and some electric services start near York this year. Trains will increase service and seats by a third. Travel between cities will improve. The project creates a lasting impact on the region.

The project employs 5,000 people now and plans 8,000 roles in its lifetime. Most workers live near the project route. Local businesses also benefit, with over £500m spent.
