The council runs two homes for young people, and Whitrigg House is one of them. That house has five bedrooms, two floors, living rooms, and a kitchen. The council states that the current house isn’t modern enough.
The plan for this new house originated in 2023. It will cost £1 million to build, and will accommodate four young people. Support staff will also have designated accommodation within the new building.
They are planning a small on-site apartment to aid young people’s transition to independent living. The new house is situated next to Torcroft House, strategically improving the accessibility and integration of their services.
The area benefits from a strong community presence, bolstered by the existing Torcroft House. Ongoing dialogues will continue with staff, young people, the school, and the community during construction. This collaborative approach will ensure the project aligns with the needs and values of the local area.
Anne McMillan emphasized their commitment of prioritizing care for children. She sees this project as a key component of that commitment. She looks forward to its completion and the positive impact it will have on the lives of young people.
