Hey, guess what happened in Cork! They gave out community awards. It was the Mayor’s 12th annual event. They honored people making a big difference.

Eleven awards went to groups county-wide, and Mayor Joe Carroll gave out the prizes. Two special awards went to overall winners: one to a sports group open to all, and another to a community leader.

West Cork Jesters won the group award. They started in 2018 with tag rugby for a disability support group. They now do boxing, yoga, art, cooking, and social events.

They made history with mixed-ability rugby and played in the IMART World Cup. Mayor Carroll gave them the award, and several group members were there.

Donal Kelly won the individual prize. For 50 years, he has helped Castletownbere, leading the Queen of the Sea festival and being involved in GAA and the golf club.

He also founded the Beara Action Group and aided the development association. They worked on the community center, and Mayor Carroll presented the award to him.

Mayor Carroll praised all the nominees, saying volunteers make Cork better and calling their dedication truly inspiring. He added that the awards recognize great nominees.

The entries were incredibly impressive this year. He sees amazing work across Cork’s towns. These awards show a bit of gratitude, as each nominee impacts their community.

Moira Murrell, Cork County Council’s Chief Executive, said the council works with everyone to ensure the county thrives and flourishes. She thanked each wonderful nominee, noting that people freely give their time and energy.
