New Quay is a popular spot in Wales. Tourists have loved it for years and it was called Britain’s “prettiest town” last year. The coastline is still unspoiled.

Locals see the remote location differently, noting that it’s full of tourist shops, but a regular supermarket is missing. Some even call it the most isolated town because services are far away.

About 1,045 people live there. Going to Tesco or Aldi requires a 20-mile drive, and the train station in Aberystwyth is 40 minutes away. A YouTuber went to New Quay to explore life there.

He thought the town was very beautiful, and loved the colorful houses, each with a unique color that looked great together. Wales has few major roads, he noted.

New Quay uses the A487 road, which connects to Aberystwyth and Cardigan. The YouTuber drove from Manchester on country roads, highlighting that the lack of motorways adds to isolation, which affects the west coast towns.

A local shared his hospital trip plans, explaining that he had a surgery coming up. First, he drives 20 miles to Aberystwyth, then it’s a 116-mile trip to Swansea and back for surgery.

The town lacks some key things like a a bank, supermarket, or train station. Cash machines are also rare, making buses key for those who do not drive. It was once a fishing village where herring was the main catch long ago.

Now, fishermen catch lobsters and prawns. Poet Dylan Thomas wrote “Under Milk Wood” here, finding inspiration in this village. The town felt charming, beautiful, peaceful, and isolated, and perhaps people want that isolation; being far away does not scare everyone.
