Penarth mansion, Gardenhurst, may soon be converted into flats after sitting derelict since its 2014 closure.

The Pegler family owned it long ago. It later became a care facility. Plans exist to convert it into flats since its 2014 closure. Councillor Ernest wants it back in use, thinking neglect would be a shame.
In 2016, plans emerged for six flats and three houses. The Vale Council received this application, but changes occurred over the years, and a decision has been pending for a while.
The council extended the decision deadline to March 29, 2025. Another extension requires a new agreement. A local member called it to the planning committee, who will make the final decision.
A 2015 plan for flats was withdrawn. If the current plans win, houses will cover the car park.
The building sits empty, boarded up and hidden by greenery. Councillor Ernest wants beneficial use, wanting it prominent in the area.
The Vale Council discusses the plan’s feasibility in their planning meeting on March 27, a Thursday.
Nearby, Normandy House also needs revival. Councillors called it a “blot,” as its roof collapsed long ago.
A building expert said it needed partial demolition. A report noted chimney stack concerns. Parts of some windows could collapse. Plans to make apartments were approved in 2022.
