Rhyl’s Marine Lake will be drained for maintenance starting February 24th and refilled in March.

Denbighshire Council asks for understanding, acknowledging that several watersports clubs will face a short delay. Swimming is still not allowed at the lake.
Draining starts Monday, February 24. The lake will be empty for one week as workers inspect revetments and do upkeep. They might also pick up litter.
Refilling should start the week of March 3. Past refills caused water quality problems because river water brought bacteria into the lake. Sewage and runoff were possible causes.
In 2022, the lake water failed to meet bathing standards. Natural Resources Wales found an issue: an automatic system was not working correctly, and they also found bacteria. The system got fixed, and now, the lake has a “good” bathing quality rating.
Cllr Barry Mellor confirmed annual maintenance is happening and thanked people for their patience. He stated that this work is important.
Marine Lake changed a lot since 1895. Marshland became a fun fair with water slides, and it is now a popular spot for walks. Joggers and children also enjoy it.
A miniature railway still circles the lake, the last bit from its fun fair days. The site includes a playground too. Wildlife, like swans, love this haven.
