Village Postie Eddie Retires After 40 Years of All-Weather Shorts

Eddie Whitaker retired after forty years as a postman. He always wore shorts, rain or shine, and locals gave him a surprise send-off. He worked in Marchington village and the surrounding area was also his route.

Over one hundred people attended Eddie’s retirement party. They wrote memories in a special book, their way to thank him. Villagers filled the Dog and Partridge pub to say goodbye to Eddie.

His family brought him to the pub. Present were his wife, Pat, and his daughters, Sarah and Charlotte. Sarah came with her husband, Andy, and baby Vinnie. Charlotte arrived with her partner, Alex, and baby Florence. Eddie was surprised by the party.

Andrew Mann, a resident, gave a short speech where he mentioned Eddie’s reliable service. He also joked about the famous shorts. People will miss Eddie’s friendly talks and all of Marchington wishes him well.

Eddie expressed surprise, admitting he suspected something after a quiet week. He started working at age sixteen. He joined the Royal Navy then, serving nine years and traveling the world.

He left the Navy in 1984. He interviewed with the post office, beginning his postal career on June 4, 1984. Postmen were assigned to sections initially, with Marchington and Kingstone as two separate sections.

In 1992, they assigned one postman per job. Eddie’s seniority led him to Kingstone. He then moved to Marchington in 1996, remaining in Marchington for twenty-eight years.

Eddie said he could write a book about his job. He made hundreds of friends in the area. He thanked everyone for coming to his party. Many people had conversations with Eddie.

He listened and laughed with people, and even shed tears sometimes. Eddie felt lucky to be part of their lives. He plans a holiday during retirement and will spend time with his grandchildren.
