Artists seek permission to bring back hand-painted ads on Blackpool building walls, reminiscent of vintage designs.

Urban Art Media has asked for permission from Blackpool Council. They are proposing to paint an ad on a Promenade building wall, facing a car park and a fish and chip shop. Joseph Boniface, an architect, is assisting them with this project.
The plan resembles art from the Sand, Sea and Spray festival which brought various artists to Blackpool, leaving behind numerous street art pieces still visible today. One example is Nomad Clan’s art, located facing the East Topping Street car park.
The company aims to offer ad space to property owners, utilizing blank gable walls. Hand-painted ads were once common, filling entire building sides before being covered by new boards holding paper ads. Many of those paper ads still exist, with some now being replaced by LED screens.
The plan centers on high-quality painted ads advertising various goods and services. These advertised products won’t be directly related to the buildings themselves. Nomad Clan is expected to repaint new ads over the old ones.
If approved, the team will need access to the gable wall. The painting media used will be similar to the supplies used during the art festival and will advertise a product. The application (25/0115) is under review, and town hall planners will ultimately make the decision.
