I read something interesting about UK seaside areas. It talked about their GDP per person, meaning the total value of goods and services produced. West Kent had the highest average GDP at £42,175 in 2022, according to the latest official data.

Camden and the City of London had a much higher average, reaching £599,588 per person. West Kent includes places near the Thames and Medway rivers, such as Allhallows, Hoo, and the Isle of Grain. Chattenden and Upnor are also located in West Kent, while Chatham, Rochester and Gillingham are south of West Kent.

RSPB Cliffe Pools, a wildlife area, is in West Kent too. Allhallows features Slough Fort, even though it’s far from Slough. They built the fort in 1867 to protect the River Thames during a period of tension with France.

A British fighter plane crashed near Allhallows in 1940 after fighting a German plane. The Royal Navy quickly rescued the pilot. The wrecked plane remained there until 1998. Allhallows was earmarked to become a resort after World War One.

Hoo’s name might originate from the Saxons, possibly meaning “spur of land” or describing the hills’ shape. Hoo’s church dates back to the 1200s. The Isle of Grain beach has received a three-star rating from the UK Beach Guide. They describe it as feeling remote, even with London nearby, and cite The Hogarth Inn pub there.

Chattenden once housed a military training camp, opening in 1872 for soldiers. From 1876 to 1877, a small prison held convicts, It had space for about one hundred prisoners.

Upnor boasts a castle constructed to protect warships. Building began in 1559, and the castle was updated between 1599 and 1601. However, it couldn’t stop the Dutch in 1667, who burned English ships.
