Major changes are coming to waste collection. Most UK homes could have four bins starting in early March.

The government’s plan requires four containers: one for non-recyclable trash, another for food and garden waste, one more for paper and cardboard, and the last one for plastic, metal, and glass. These containers could be bins, bags, or boxes.
Recycling will become simpler across England. You can recycle the same things everywhere. No need to check local rules anymore. All recyclable household items will be collected everywhere. The new system aims to end collection confusion.
Councils now collect different materials. The government lets local areas adapt the changes and published guidelines for waste collectors. This helps them decide how to collect paper and other items. Everyone will get better waste services, and people can recycle more.
Food waste will be picked up weekly. Councils may change trash services, but they should make sure needs are met and standards must remain reasonable. This policy will help UK recycling and save emissions.
The government shared details on some exceptions, which will start in December 2024. Businesses and councils have more time to get ready. By March 31, businesses must collect core recyclables, including glass, metal, plastic, paper, and food, excluding garden waste.
This does not apply immediately to small businesses. Smaller firms get a temporary break until March 31, 2027. Then, they must recycle core waste. Local councils must collect core recyclables by March 31, 2026. This involves weekly food waste pick-up.
Plastic film collections will start by March 31, 2027. Businesses and homes will have this service.
