Over 3,930 migrants arrested in the UK for illegal work. Raids targeted nail bars, car washes, and restaurants across the country.

These arrests are up 38% from last year. Officials know migrants face false promises, as criminal gangs organize dangerous UK trips. Migrants then face poor work conditions. They often work long hours for low pay.
Many migrants crossed the English Channel. Some overstayed their visas instead, working in stores and other businesses. The government is increasing enforcement to respect immigration laws.
The Home Secretary stated employers exploit migrants. Some people work illegally with no action. This encourages risky Channel crossings. It also hurts vulnerable people and the economy.
January saw 609 arrests after 828 visits, a record high for that month since records began in 2019. In January 2024, there were fewer arrests – 352 arrests after 556 visits.
Arrests in Wales and West England doubled, going from 45 to 101. The government launched social media campaigns in Vietnam and Albania. They tell of migrant debt and exploitation.
Parliament will debate a new Border Bill. It adds offences to fight people smugglers and give police new powers. They can stop Channel crossings, and boat part sellers could face 14 years in jail. Putting lives at risk could mean five years in jail.
Police can also check electronic devices to find information on organized crime. The Prime Minister wants to treat smugglers as terrorists.
A human rights group voiced concerns about the bill. They worry about counter-terror powers use. Others want safe routes for refugees, while the government will scrap the Rwanda plan.
The Illegal Migration Act will change, but limits will stay on safe routes and detention times. Some want more help for legal advice. Conservatives want to change citizenship rules again.
Labour says the bill is weak. They claim it will not stop boats. The Labour party has their own plan instead, using counter-terror powers to stop people-smuggling gangs. They say they are fixing previous errors.
