Newcastle-under-Lyme mourns Mayor Barry Panter after a fatal accident. A book of condolence opens for tributes.

Barry Panter represented Loggerheads since 2016. He served on the borough council. The book is in Castle House library and will be available all day on February 20.
All mayoral events are cancelled until after the funeral, but the date is not yet confirmed. The Union Flag flies at half-mast in Queens Gardens near Castle House and will stay that way until the evening of the funeral.
Council Leader Simon Tagg shared a statement. Many people contacted the council about Barry and spoke of his community work, expressing shock and sadness. The book allows residents to express condolences, and the council will give it to his wife, Beatrice.
Reverend Tim Watson saw Barry at a council meeting where he was excited about raising money for the mayor’s charities. He expressed his sadness, noting that Barry was a kind and passionate man who connected people.
Adam Jogee, MP, was also shocked, having marked a disaster anniversary with Barry weeks ago. His condolences go to Barry’s wife, family, and friends.
Madeley Parish Council reported his passing with sadness, noting that Barry was a former Parish Councillor and a loved member of their community. The council sends thoughts to his family.
David Williams, MP, met Barry at a fundraiser and an awards event and found him to be a decent person. He sends condolences to Barry’s wife and family.
Allison Gardner, MP, also expressed sadness. She remembered Barry’s dedication during her time as a councillor and sends condolences to his family and friends.
Newcastle College is saddened by the news. NSCG Principal Craig Hodgson shared his thoughts and sends them to Barry’s wife, family, and friends.
The Loggerheads committee is also saddened, remembering how he cared about the Loggerheads ward and was a proud RAF veteran. The committee sends sympathy to his family and friends.
The New Vic Theatre shared their sadness, noting that Barry supported the theatre a lot and they will miss him very much. They send condolences to Beatrice and his family.
Philip Astley Projects CIC is deeply saddened because Barry supported their work and liked circus and showbusiness history, attending many events. They send condolences to Barry’s family.
