Iconic building on London Road gutted for 199 flats. The original facade will be kept.

Renovation work just began. The building has a fence now. Workers appear to have gutted the inside. The outside walls remain the same. You can see scaffolding outside.
They plan to make flats there. This plan got approved last February. TJ Hughes wanted a city center spot. The new building will have 199 flats.
The developers want to keep its style. The tower should remain. The front looks similar still. They lowered the height of the plans, which makes the front details stand out.
Audley House will have apartments. There’ll be 129 one-bed flats, and seventy flats will have two beds. There will be a gym downstairs too.
TJ Hughes was a London Road landmark. It started in 1912. The first shop was small and had just five helpers.
In 1925, they moved there. Thomas Hughes started the store. He worked at Owen Owen first. Then he worked at Blacklers store too. Owen Owen and TJ Hughes joined in 1927.
TJ Hughes became a big store. Hundreds worked there and people shopped there for years. The store closed on London Road last year and opened on Church Street.
