A 19-year-old will spend 10 more months in jail for attacking a guard, who lost his job of 18 years because of the attack.

Niall Grizzle was 17 then, happening at Werrington Institute. He got upset while guards escorted him and asked what bothered him. He wanted to speak to a supervisor.
A male officer came to help, but Grizzle punched him. The officer fell, hitting his head. Grizzle yelled about being violated. Another officer restrained Grizzle and took him to his cell.
Emily Calman spoke for the prosecution, noting Grizzle’s violent history. She said the guard got head lumps and went home that day. He felt sad and anxious; he couldn’t sleep and lost appetite.
He got counseling and tried working again but suffered another attack. He lost his job in June 2024 and he still had mental health problems.
Grizzle, now 19, admitted his crime and got 10 more months in jail, added to his current sentence.
Omar Majid defended Grizzle, stating it lasted eight seconds. CCTV showed punches, but many missed. It was not a long attack, and he used no weapon. It was impulsive, due to agitation. Majid stated Grizzle is still young and immature.
The guard mentioned another inmate’s prior attack, and it wasn’t fair to blame Grizzle fully.
Judge Smith spoke to Grizzle, highlighting the guard’s job loss after 18 years. Now he works in a warehouse and lost pension money. The judge believed he liked his old job.
The attack caused lasting mental harm. The guard’s life changed negatively and he suffered serious psychological harm.
