New shop near student housing in Swansea seeks to sell alcohol but faces opposition due to local anti social behavior

Some worry about more local problems. Jeraldchandru Balasingh will manage the store. He will follow council rules, like single can sales. He said his other shops had no issues.
Councillors White and Hopkins spoke at the meeting. Llais Tawe residents face student misbehavior. They also get asked for money, near the hostel. White noted people camping by the river.
White thinks a liquor license will cause problems. Issues include drinking, drugs, and assaults nearby. Hopkins feels Llais Tawe people deserve better. She was disappointed that police did not object to the store’s license.
Cllr Matthews stated a key restriction. The shop can’t sell single cans above 6.5% alcohol if they get the license. White wondered how they would check this.
Parking is a concern near the student building too. Sunthar Lal Kailasanathan said they would use CCTV. The outside area will have good lights. Lidl sells alcohol; it’s closer to the hostel. Home Bargains at Parc Tawe also sells it.
Parking causes arguments on nearby streets. Residents face shouting if they park wrong. The store has one Pottery Street parking spot. Deliveries will use Pottery, not New Cut Road. Staff will likely live close, limiting car use.
Three people wrote objections to the license. One person supported the store. They live near other alcohol retailers. They think objecting is unfair because of this. The council will decide within five days.
