Jake Clapham-Richmond jailed for A19 crash, seriously injuring three friends after reckless driving in stolen car. He drove at 105mph.

He took his mom’s car on July 22, 2023. She did not give him permission to use it. He picked up Charlotte Mason, Luke Fergus, and Leyton Kennedy. He had no license and no insurance.
He drove recklessly, and they told him to slow down. Judge Earl said the weather was “dreadful.” Clapham-Richmond crashed into a barrier on the A19. This happened at the A690 junction in Sunderland.
His friends suffered major injuries in the wreck. Charlotte was in a coma after a brain bleed. Luke fractured his vertebrae. Leyton broke his leg from the impact of the crash. The driver broke both legs.
Judge Earl called it one of the worst cases. He said it was the worst in 20 years without a death. He was lucky not to face more serious charges.
Luke Fergus described the driving as “idiotic.” A witness said it was very wet and there was lots of spray on the roads.
Police found he drove up to 105 mph, about 10 seconds before the crash. The speed did decrease prior to impact.
Charlotte Mason said her life changed forever. She has metal frames in her back now. She deals with nerve damage constantly, and doctors removed part of her skull.
He pleaded guilty to his charges in court. The charges include causing serious injury. He also faced a charge concerning vehicle theft.
The judge sentenced him to two and a half years. He cannot drive for over five years.
