The NSPCC says many kids live with heavy drinkers. Over a thousand Leicestershire children are affected. National data shows one in five UK children are affected. Parents’ drinking habits can cause problems for children.

The NSPCC and Nacoa want kids to seek support. Nacoa says about 1,100 kids in Leicestershire are affected. This was during Children of Alcoholics Week. 389 children are affected in Leicester city, while 609 children are affected in the wider Leicestershire county.

NSPCC says parental substance abuse is truly devastating for the lives of children. It impacts them even in adulthood, they explained. Parents often struggle to care for their children and cannot respond to their children’s needs. Kids may suffer impaired development because of this, resulting in learning and memory issues.

NSPCC says that children may not speak out about this. Everyone can help by looking for signs of child distress. The NSPCC helpline provides support for struggling families.

Nacoa says kids may dread going home and may hide their home situations from friends. Kids hide the problem because of family loyalty, feeling like talking is disloyal. Children may also believe they are responsible for a parent’s drinking.

Talking to someone helps relieve children’s burdens. It shows them that this situation is not their fault and it is not their responsibility. The drinker is the only one who can make the change, allowing the child to simply live their own lives.

NSPCC and Nacoa offer helplines for support. Children can talk to friends, family, or teachers. Childline also offers confidential support. Childline is free and open 24/7 at 0800 1111. Nacoa’s Helpline supports anyone affected by parental drinking. Call 0800 358 3456 or email helpline@nacoa.org.uk.
