7,000 homes and 4,500 jobs planned for Strangeways area. Prison location and flooding pose challenges to development.

Manchester and Salford made a plan. They want 7,000 new homes there. The plan includes health places and a park. It could create 4,500 new jobs.
The plan is for Strangeways and Cambridge. Police cleaned up the area first. People called it ‘Counterfeit Street’ before.
The area includes Salford’s Cambridge Estate. It covers roads in Manchester too. These are Bury New Road and Cheetham Hill Road. Cheetham Park is also included.
A big prison is a problem for the plan. It sits right in the middle of Strangeways. This makes building difficult.
The Manchester leader said the area has issues. The prison blocks development. But the community has a lot of potential.
She wants big changes in Strangeways. They will work with locals. They want to hear ideas from people and businesses.
The leader asked the government to move the prison before. The old building needs too many changes. It would cost a lot to modernize it.
The government said they have no plans to move it. Flooding is another problem for builders. The Salford side near the river floods often.
The plan wants to fix this with drainage. Salford’s mayor wants to balance needs. He wants to protect the area from climate change.
Salford will talk about the plan March 11. Manchester will discuss it on March 14.
