Stockport’s center has changed a lot recently. They’ve added housing, shops, and better transport, and cultural spaces are now trendy spots. The town plans to keep growing quickly, aiming for 8,000 new homes by 2040 through a one billion pound project.

This week, people saw Stockport’s design plans, a 160-page document to guide future development and steer the regeneration of the town.

The guide protects Stockport’s skyline, requiring new buildings to fit the existing look and respect key buildings like the town hall and the viaduct. A large upgrade project is happening now.

Parks and open space are priorities. They want pedestrian and cycling friendly streets, ensuring homes have space and natural light. The town aims for new developments with shared areas and seeks “rich green infrastructure” to thrive.

Car park rules are also clear in the guide. Surface parking must blend into the town, integrating parking into courtyards. Streets will mix seating and art, promoting more function than just travel.

Planit and 5Plus Architects made the guide, using community input from public talks.

Council leader Mark Hunter spoke about the guide, stating it helps Stockport become the best place. The designs ensure quality and sustainable communities that align with the town’s vision.

Caleb Jones (Planit) also commented. More housing meets demand for city living, protecting Stockport’s unique look. The overall intention creates attractiveness, encouraging people to live and work in Stockport.
