Stafford Borough might change soon. It could join Stoke-on-Trent. This is due to a big government plan. The council celebrated 50 years last year. It formed in 1974 from four smaller groups.

The government wants to reorganize councils. They want bigger “unitary” councils, each representing over 500,000 people. This change would affect Staffordshire, which uses a two-tier council system now.

Some councillors worry about the plan. They fear Stoke-on-Trent will absorb them. Stafford councillors want to discuss it and gain input from both locals and members.

Councillor Pert wants a council vote before agreeing to changes. He said the public did not vote for this and thinks Staffordshire’s system works well. He fears Stafford will lose out to Stoke.

The council’s deputy leader, Rob Kenney, responded by saying the plan is very important. The council will involve everyone and consult the public. Councillors will review proposals before submission.

Pert values a public consultation on the matter, noting its importance. The government wants initial plans quickly. Kenney admitted the timeline is tight but stated the government will decide if they don’t act.

Councillor Edgeller is anxious about this change and says residents were not asked. She questions joining with Stoke-on-Trent, adding that Stoke is one of the more deprived areas.

Edgeller also spoke of the elderly and worried about money being spent in Stoke. She asks what will happen to Stafford. She hopes for the leaders to prioritize Staffordshire and wants a press release for the public.

A government minister wrote to councils requesting an “interim plan” swiftly, with a complete proposal due later. He said elections for new councils would follow if approved.

The minister spoke about simpler government and wanting power outside of London. He said councils face a crisis, with many requesting help with budgets. The government wants empowered councils.

They say it will increase value for taxpayers. The government seeks to deliver for all, and the minister asked councils to create a reform proposal.
