Glasgow’s Springburn was once full of life, known for its strong communities and industries. Sadly, Springburn faced many setbacks, including industry decline and a motorway that cut through it.

Locals feel a mix of pride and longing, remembering Springburn’s past glory. People share memories on Facebook groups, with one group having over 13,000 members who post old school and work photos.

One comment captures the community’s feelings, stating the city harmed Springburn more than war. The A803 and M80 hurt the community badly, and ironically, Springburn is now more isolated due to poor bus service and surrounding roads.

The Springburn Post Office’s closure adds to the problems, despite the council and other groups wanting to help regenerate the area. Councillor Campbell says Springburn hasn’t recovered, as the decline started long ago, and the Winter Gardens are a source of anger.

He mentioned funding issues and bank closures that hurt the town center, but noted the community spirit shown by the Christmas market that drew people back. However, council finances are tight, and Springburn didn’t get the same funding as others, questioning which town lost 85% of its buildings.

He says Springburn was once like Byres Road, providing infrastructure for the city. Locals have plans to revive it, but they need government funding to succeed, and the post office closure hurts their efforts.

Councillor Rannachan says locals are proud and want to spend money locally. The absence of the post office and banks makes it harder for new businesses to come, despite progress with the Winter Gardens. He wants Springburn to be like Strathbungo, believing good investment can bring prosperity and that Springburn needs the same help as the south.

MSP Doris wants to save the post office and wrote to the UK government about it, ultimately pointing out the UK government decided the closure. A petition supporting the post office highlights that the closure hurts those with mobility issues, as the post office offers vital banking and is a social hub. It urges people to sign and help save it.
