Gym users are worried about rising costs. Southwark Council plans to raise leisure centre fees. The council’s cabinet approved this in the budget on Tuesday, February 4th.

Membership prices could go up a lot, with people potentially paying £144 more per year. A monthly pass might increase by £12, from £31.99 to £43.99. Gym users spoke about this on Thursday, February 6th.

One woman, Vanessa, is 62, and might switch gyms because of the price. She said the increase is a large amount that could stop people from using local gyms. Vanessa will likely use the nearby park.

Luana, 48, also commented, expressing a desire for better gyms if prices increase. She says the gyms are in bad shape and complained about flies and overcrowding.

Simon Treacy, 37, sees things differently, finding it cheaper than other options. Simon prefers his money going to the council, believing it is better than a corporation.

Simon goes to the gym once or twice a week and said he can afford the new price. However, he knows others will struggle, which will impact their ability to go.

Another gym user thinks it could be worth it, mentioning the new Canada Water centre opening. The new centre, set to open in the spring, will replace Seven Islands Leisure Centre and have new features.

It will provide 150 pieces of equipment, two pools, fitness studios, and a hall.

Councillor Portia Mwangangye, in charge of leisure matters, also commented. She said the facilities are accessible and that the council believes it will promote wellness.

She noted the centers offer great value and they aim for affordable prices. The council also wants services available to everyone. Free swim and gym are already present, along with sessions for older adults and discounts for students and veterans.

Refurbishing the gyms justifies fee increases. The council seeks clean facilities, addresses overcrowding and invests in centres.
