Backwell locals defend their district councillor. The parish council asked her to resign; this was after she took leave for mental health.

Bridget Petty is a North Somerset councillor, representing Backwell since 2019. Bridget recently lost both parents and plans a five-month leave to travel in Europe with family.

While council rules allow six months leave, the parish council thinks she should resign, saying it is “best for the village.” However, locals support Petty; forty-seven people signed a letter of support.

Rick Evans wrote the letter, emphasizing the importance of mental health and expressing dismay at the parish council’s response. The letter states that Bridget deserves support, not pressure, and highlights her significant contributions to Backwell.

The letter urges support for Bridget, aiming to show her that the community cares and appreciates her contributions. It argues that community thrives through compassion and support.

Bridget stated that the decision was difficult, driven by her need to prioritize her mental health. She hopes to return and serve the community well, which she considers most important.

Bridget is reassured by the local support, evident both from residents and the support letter.

The parish council respects her decision and wishes her well during her time off. They maintain that, as councillors, their focus remains on the village’s best interest.

They suggest a by-election to ensure dedicated representation for Backwell, allowing Petty flexibility for an extended break and enabling her to return when she feels ready.

Annemieke Waite and Thomas Daw, Green councillors, will assist Backwell locals with any local issues that may arise during her absence. Bridget’s leave extends from mid-March to mid-August, and she does not anticipate missing any important votes.
