A café in Somerset is giving away money to help local groups. Bluebird Café and Bar is in Wedmore and is celebrating two years. They want to help the community again, as last year, they gave over £10,000.

Andy Daintree and Ian Scott started the café; people call Ian “Scottie”. The café is a place for the village and also a stage for music. They have live music every Saturday, with comedy and quizzes as regulars too. They also have music bingo and jazz.

Andy said community is key and they want to help local people. Groups can meet there easily, as people enjoy the friendly place. They can eat and drink there daily, serving coffee, cake and lunch during the day. Evenings offer drinks and pizza.

Ian said the community supports them, and he’s happy to give back again. They want local groups to apply, where these projects can get funding. The café desires to donate to causes, which allows them to support a wide range of initiatives.

Last year’s money helped many things; one was updating the village directory. It lists health and wellbeing info, delivering this to every home. A hospice group bought a new pump, used to deliver medicine or blood.

Other groups got help too, including gardens and scouts. Cricket, schools, and a “Men’s Shed” also benefited. A cycling group received support plus the village farm, along with the tennis club and other projects.

Bluebird will start a contest for young performers. Students age 16 to 18 can enter, and local schools will run it. The goal is to showcase talent, as they hope to support young musicians.

Funding applications open March 3, with April 18 being the deadline for applying. They will give out money on May 22; the presentation will happen at the café.
