Somerset may get better bus service soon. This involves a government-funded program. Sadly, Taunton’s £1.50 bus fare will likely end.

The council already tested some bus plans. These included cheaper fares and night buses. They also created transport hubs.

It follows money from the bus improvement plan in 2022. The government gave over £6 million more for buses. This money is for the year 2025-2026. The council will now decide how to use it best.

Proposed ideas include changes for Yeovil and Bridgwater. Evening buses are being considered there too. They will study transport hubs for both towns. They also plan bus signal changes. Other bus improvements may occur.

Taunton’s night buses could get funding. It depends on how many people use them. The £1 park and ride fare in Taunton will stay. They also support the Taunton transport hub. The council will review other funded bus routes. Such routes needed help to avoid being cut.

The £1.50 Taunton fare ends in March. It won’t continue because of the expense. The money would prevent county-wide improvements. A £3 fare cap is in place till December 2025 across Somerset.

Councilor Richard Wilkins spoke about the bus plan. He stated the current £1.50 Taunton fare is costly. He wants money for the wider county. He mentioned progress in Taunton. Now, they want to aid Yeovil, Bridgwater, and more areas. The council will review all the extra funded routes.

The plans and costs are not yet set. Somerset Council will create a report next month. A final decision on these ideas happens this spring.
