SnowDome Ltd. fined £100,000 after 12-year-old Louis Watkiss died in a tobogganing accident due to safety failures.

He crashed into staff on the main slope on September 24, 2021. The accident caused fatal injuries. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigated. SnowDome Limited broke health and safety rules. The company admitted guilt in court.
The court hearing was in Telford. They must also pay a victim surcharge of £2,000. Costs are £14,534.20 too.
The HSE said Louis slid into a staff member. The worker was walking on the slope. The staff member fell, and they fell onto Louis. He died there from head injuries.
The investigation showed safety failures. The SnowDome didn’t ensure customer safety. Risk assessment was insufficient for tobogganing. They didn’t consider everyone on the slope.
Nathan Cook spoke for the HSE. He said Louis should’ve returned home safely. The SnowDome’s failures caused his death. The company should have assessed risks properly.
Venues must do risk assessments. They need safe work systems for employees. Training and supervision also matter. Risk assessment is vital everywhere, not just factories. Think about risks from equipment plus people.
Louis’ parents, Chris and Natalie Watkiss, shared memories. He was their “love, pride and joy.” Louis was a talented, sports-loving musician. He was a son, brother, grandson, cousin and friend.
He excelled in school and loved learning. He reached grade 5 in saxophone. He played in two jazz groups. Louis loved Chelsea and England football. He also liked cricket.
They are thankful George had joyful years. George will remember Louis’ strong nature. His parents are grateful to have known him. Celebrate Louis’ life, not just his death. His smile will never be forgotten.
His parents want mandatory helmets now. They want this rule enforced. They hope to prevent future tragedies.
