Family begs that the ‘monster’ who killed a Galway doctor in 2006 not be released, fearing for women’s safety.

Patrick “Pa” Hogan killed Karen Guinee in 2006. He got a life sentence. He can apply for parole though, and Karen’s family attends hearings, trying to keep Hogan in jail.
Karen’s sister, Laura Guinee, spoke to a news outlet. She will attend an event on femicide in Dublin on February 14. Laura wants Hogan to stay locked up. She wants to protect women in Ireland and in Galway, because Hogan brutally ended Karen’s life.
Laura explained the family’s fight. Hogan keeps applying for parole. The family must meet with the board. They plead with them to deny his release. She said they failed to protect Karen. Now they aim to safeguard other women, protecting them from Hogan.
Hogan, Karen’s boyfriend, killed her in 2006. The crime shocked everyone, and the court handed Hogan a life sentence. Karen was from Cork. She was a doctor, sharing a Galway flat with Hogan, who was her boyfriend then.
Karen was near graduation and her birthday. Between June 11 and 12, 2006, Hogan attacked Karen, assaulting, strangling, and beating her. Then, Hogan injured himself. He admitted to the murder and went to jail in 2008.
Karen was likely unconscious during the assault. The inquest heard she was beaten, possibly with a hammer. Karen’s uncle spoke during the trial. He said she was too caring, and her loving nature made her a victim.
Laura spoke after Hogan’s sentence in 2008. She said nothing can bring Karen back. Everyone is heartbroken. She would have been an amazing doctor, and it’s a loss for the world.
