A large sinkhole closed a main road. It led to traffic delays and rerouted bus services.

Inrix reports the road closure runs both ways, from Moor Street to Park Road, causing very slow traffic. Arriva North West also warns of bus delays affecting routes 375, 385, and 310.
The local council suggests avoiding the area, hoping for a quick resolution. The ECHO has contacted Lancashire County Council, responsible for road maintenance, for comment.
Locals on Facebook report significant traffic issues, with one user mentioning Wigan Road being backed up and another describing “absolute mayhem.” School buses have experienced notable delays due to the congestion.
The British Geological Survey defines sinkholes as natural dips caused by dissolving rocks underground. Heavy rain or floods can initiate them, and human activities such as construction, broken pipes, and drainage issues can also trigger sinkholes.
