Direct rail link could slash Leicester to Coventry journeys to 32 minutes, boosting economy and creating jobs.

Midlands Connect announced this on Friday. Leicester to Nottingham could drop, too. Travel could go from 117 to 65 minutes. They want old routes back. The 2000s improvements changed things. This project could help the area’s economy.
It might bring £400 million. The government must approve the plan first. Decisions should come between 2025 and 2028.
The project needs significant work done. They plan to add track near Leicester. A new platform at Coventry is also planned. Plus, a “dive-under” at Nuneaton. Coventry could get two faster trains. These will reach Leicester and Nottingham. Trains stop at Hinckley and Loughborough. Local trains will serve smaller towns.
Midlands Connect expects good returns. Each £1 invested brings £2.10 back. The project should create 3,000 jobs. These jobs will be during building and supply.
The mayor supports the plan. It provides direct train routes between cities. It helps freight routes and removes trucks. The scheme can connect seven big universities.
The CEO of Midlands Connect discussed transport. Only 3% choose trains between Leicester and Coventry. Coventry to Birmingham sees 30% train use. The new line could change this greatly.
