Sherwood Forest Day debuts to honor local heritage. MP Michelle Welsh championed the event, highlighting the area’s significance.

Michelle Welsh, a Labour MP, proposed the special day. She submitted an Early Day Motion (EDM) in Parliament, calling for Sherwood Forest’s recognition. Local groups worked together for this event.
Richard Townsley, a volunteer, helped draft the motion, which was supported by ten MPs. February 20 is also significant because it’s Major Hayman Rooke’s birthday anniversary. The Major Oak got its name from him.
The early day motion speaks highly of Sherwood Forest, calling it a national treasure. Its connection to Robin Hood makes it famous globally, representing a cultural and environmental asset.
Michelle Welsh spoke at a recent event, saying she feels incredibly proud and believes Nottinghamshire has much to offer. She noted Sherwood Forest’s importance in her area.
Welsh hopes the day will expand in the future, allowing people to participate in various activities to explore. The community can come together at events. Andy Gaunt called Sherwood Forest the “green heart of England”.
