The council plans to spend £87,000 on school streets. Three primary schools will get them, and green campaigners see this as a win. But, questions arose about the budget.

Previous estimates were much higher, stating that one school street cost £200,000. The council now says it can do three for less, which raises concerns about cost-cutting measures.

Saskia Heijltjes, a Green councillor, welcomed the progress on school streets. These streets make areas safer and healthier, and they also reduce pollution near schools. The Green Party, however, worries about the project’s scope. It may only cover cul-de-sacs or one-way streets.

They want transparency from Councillor Sarah Warren, urging her to share the delivery plan. Joanna Wright, who leads the Green group, said kids waited too long for these streets. School routes affect their health and well-being, she added, noting that school streets improve health.

The Greens want a five-year plan published to ensure safety for all students. They also want high-quality school streets by 2030, applying to every primary school.
