People in Salford want a new town council. This would give them more control locally, as residents feel they need more say and want a stronger voice on local issues.

A petition requests the Town of Broughton Park council, which around one thousand people have already signed. They want more control over local decisions, which are currently made by Salford City Council.

One councilor believes a new council would help support local people, stating that current services don’t meet their needs, with bin collections being a significant issue.

Families report that bin collections are too infrequent, forcing many to pay for private bin services. The current council won’t offer different services in different areas, making devolution a possible solution.

The new council could manage local services like waste, cleaning, parks, and planning, potentially also including community services. This would give residents control over these aspects.

Salford Council has received the petition and will initiate a ‘community governance’ review. This review aims to identify service delivery improvements, and the council will adhere to legal processes throughout.

The review is expected to take approximately a year. One councilor considers this a “landmark” moment as it brings decisions closer to the people, emphasizing that locals should decide local matters.

He hopes for a referendum in May 2026, allowing voters to decide their own future regarding control over waste, streets, parks, and planning.
