Ronan Keating criticizes the lenient suspended sentence for the driver in his brother’s death, calling for an appeal.

Dean Harte received a sentence for careless driving causing death. The court gave Harte a suspended sentence of 17 months, meaning he won’t serve time in jail. In addition, he cannot drive for two years.
Ronan stated that his family is very disappointed, expressing their hope that the DPP will appeal the sentence. He voiced this sentiment on social media, emphasizing that the family believes the sentence was too lenient. The family wants justice for Ciaran, but also for all road deaths, believing that careless driving must stop. Consequences must exist if people break the law.
Ronan stated that no family should be put in a position to make these statements. The Keating family released another statement earlier, and Ciaran’s sons and brother spoke outside the court, criticizing the justice system.
The family stated they believe the system is broken. Harte sent a phone message while driving, just before the fatal crash, yet he is walking free without jail time.
The family feels this sets a terrible example, questioning why road accidents are a recurring tragedy. They think the system ignores the problem, believing this to be morally wrong.
The court heard that several factors contributed to the crash, including worn tires and wet weather. However, a lapse in attention was the key factor, causing the car to swerve into Ciaran Keating’s car. The court was made aware of a Snapchat message sent before the crash, but the judge did not consider the message due to Harte’s claim it was sent earlier.
