Rogue Bulldogs Attack Elderly Pet Similar Incident Months Prior
Nicola Local owned the bulldogs, named Darren and Betty. The dogs escaped last January and hurt a ten-year-old dog. They also bit a woman’s hand. People said the bulldogs acted “possessed.”
Charlie, the injured dog needed stitches and now fears other dogs. His owner called it a “traumatic” event. This happened in Blackhall Colliery.
Local, aged 46, went to court and admitted her dogs were dangerously out of control. The prosecutor, Cole Cockburn, explained that Charlie was walking when the bulldogs attacked.
Local was at work when her son let the dogs out. He did not know the gate was open. The prosecutor shared the dog owner’s shock, saying the dogs charged at her and then attacked Charlie.
A neighbor heard screaming and saw the bulldogs attacking Charlie. She said they treated him like a toy, leaving him bloody. Local’s son tried to stop them and was “hysterically crying.”
One dog bit the neighbor’s hand, requiring her to receive antibiotics for her injury. After being freed, Charlie went to the vet with a big cut on his leg. The treatment cost £669.87.
Police learned the dogs attacked before in November 2023 with a similar event. The gate also left open then, with the dogs attacking another dog and injuring a person.
The woman then received a warning from Police to lock the gate. After the second attack, she said she could not ensure the gate would shut. Charlie’s owner spoke about her trauma.
“I’m worried now,” she said, fearing seeing other dogs outside. “I’ve never seen dogs so possessed before,” she added. Local admitted she failed to secure the gate.
The judge ordered the dogs to be muzzled in public, and Local got a suspended jail sentence. She must do unpaid work and pay compensation too. £1,000 goes to Charlie’s owner, and £2,000 covers the dog kennel costs.
