Furnham Road is now shut between Victoria Avenue and Glynswood until May 30 while upgrades happen.

Wessex Water is also working nearby to improve the sewage network for £1.3 million, reducing flood risk to properties. Phase one began on January 7 and closed the Furnham Road and Victoria Avenue junction.
Phase two has started, closing Furnham Road between Victoria Avenue and Glynswood until May 30. Local access is still allowed, but drivers must use Victoria Avenue, a narrow residential street where large vehicles will face problems. Traffic lights manage the Victoria Avenue junction, handling traffic from Furnham Road and Coker Way, which leads to B&Q and Wyatt Way. Signals are also on Furnham Road, by Mount Hindrance Lane, to help with pushing the new gas pipes.
To reach the town center from the north, follow the official diversion down Victoria Avenue to the A30 East Street. Or use an unofficial route: Thorndun Park Drive and Glynswood and southbound drivers should reverse these routes. Only Victoria Avenue is signposted.
Councillor Wilkins acknowledges the disruption but considers it positive to see the works progress well. He says that getting all schemes done at the same time minimizes issues, and traffic is being monitored to solve problems quickly.
Chard recently had severe flooding, causing Sainsbury’s and other businesses to close with heavy road disruptions. Wessex Water thanks everyone for their patience and states they are working with Wales & West Utilities to minimize inconvenience as much as possible.
Wales & West Utilities highlights the essential nature of this work, as underground gas pipes are vital for ensuring a safe and reliable gas supply. They report making good progress and thank the community.
Phases three and four start May 22, focusing on Glynswood’s east end. Additional diversions will be in place. The entire project should finish by late September, though weather or other issues could cause delays.
