Local businesses in Rhondda Cynon Taf could receive up to £500 in rates relief, building on Welsh Government support.

This local relief is extra support, on top of the Welsh Government’s scheme. That scheme focuses on retail, leisure, and hospitality. To qualify, businesses must meet that scheme’s rules.
If a business owes less than £500 total, they pay nothing after other reliefs are applied. The council will automatically award up to £500 if they are eligible for the government scheme. Businesses will then get a new bill showing the reductions.
The government’s small business rate relief stays the same. The council already budgeted for this local scheme as part of their financial plan, with money set aside for the rates reduction.
The Welsh Government’s scheme gives 40% rates relief for the next financial year, helping shops, pubs, restaurants, and hotels. It applies to many businesses; however, the total relief is £110,000 per business in Wales.
To qualify, businesses must serve the public and provide goods or services to visitors. Councillor Leyshon said she was glad they kept the £500.
Council Leader Morgan said they are one of the only councils in Wales doing this. They kept adding to the local rates relief scheme when many others did not.
