A man named Steven McCrum is going to prison. He drove dangerously and grabbed a police officer, which led to a 13-month sentence at Preston Crown Court on Thursday, February 20. McCrum, 32 years old, lives in Morecambe’s Arkholme Court.

His charges include assaulting an emergency worker and dangerous driving. He also faced charges for driving without insurance and failing to provide a breath or blood sample.

Police visited McCrum at 4 AM on November 17, 2024, with a warrant for his arrest. Officers found him sleeping in a car, a blue Vauxhall Astra with steamed-up windows.

The prosecutor, Samuel Eskdale, said in court that the car moved towards an officer and crashed into another car. The officer narrowly avoided being hit, and McCrum then tried driving to a grassy area, where the car got stuck between fence posts and trees.

McCrum ran away but police caught him. He grabbed the officer’s calf, and the officer hit McCrum on the chest, causing him to let go.

Prosecutors said he refused to give a sample. McCrum has 16 prior convictions covering 20 offenses between 2010 and 2014, including drunken driving and driving without a license.

His lawyer, Paul Humphries, defended him, saying McCrum panicked when approached by four armed men. He said the car moved a short distance and nobody got hurt during those actions.

Judge Richard Archer spoke about the case, highlighting that McCrum grabbed the officer’s calf and reversed when officers tried to block him. The parked car had £770 in damage, and there was a risk of harm to others.

Judge Archer noted McCrum often fails to comply and was on license from a prior case. That previous prison sentence was for 13 years.

McCrum received 13 months for dangerous driving. He can’t drive for four years and must pass an extended retest after that time.
