Police Scotland made a pay deal with officers, giving them a 4.75% raise after long and often difficult talks. The pay rise is for the year 2024/25 and was finalized through a formal arbitration process.

The Scottish Police Federation, representing police officers, had wanted more money, demanding a 5.5% increase. However, that request was turned down.

Fiona McQueen, who chairs the Police Negotiating Board, commented that the deal values police officers. She thanked officers for their patience and their representatives for their work.

Deputy Chief Constable Alan Speirs also spoke about the agreement, emphasizing officers’ significant service and value. He expressed gratitude for their dedication and believes they deserve recognition.

Police cannot legally strike, but officers showed anger about their wages. Over 100 officers protested in Glasgow’s George Square last November, believing the wage offer was inadequate.

SPF general secretary David Kennedy said officers are very angry, especially because they can’t strike like other workers. He noted many officers struggle to pay their bills due to high inflation and energy prices, asking for a fair pay award.
