A police officer, Thomas Hankin, faced a hearing. It happened on February 3, 2025. Hankin used to work for Merseyside Police. He was a detective constable back then.

Hankin filmed a crude video at his job. This took place at a police station toilet in Bootle. He sent the video during work hours on November 17, 2022.

He sent the video via WhatsApp at 10:41 AM. The recipient of the video remains unknown. Hankin’s computer was locked for a while between sending the video. The cubicle was near the protection office.

The panel decided the video was likely made on duty. Evidence showed the video got sent soon after being filmed. Hankin accessed Porn Hub on December 13, 2022. This also happened during a work break. The panel considered all these facts together.

Detective Chief Superintendent Sabi Kaur commented after the hearing. She leads the Professional Standards Department. She said they expect high standards, and actions below standard get swift action.

Kaur stated Hankin’s actions were unacceptable, and they were right to formally dismiss him later. Kaur noted that public trust means effective policing. Communities should feel confident in them, and they remove those who fail.

Kaur added that individuals’ actions cannot hurt the force’s good name. Most officers do a great job. They want to hear about wrongdoing and have “Call It Out” to encourage reports. Crimestoppers has an internal line too.

Hankin also misused a police system on December 13, 2022. He checked a vehicle for logged markers. He told someone it lacked Merseyside Police markers, and he presented no defence during the hearing.

Assistant Chief Constable Alex Goss oversaw the hearing. Two independent members were also present. They found Hankin guilty of gross misconduct. His punishment was instantly sacking.

The sacking of the former officer came without notice. Hankin is now on the College of Policing barred list. This means other such forces are informed.
