Plymouth extends the Embankment Road 30 mph speed limit after a fatal 2023 crash. Trees will be removed for safety.

They will also remove some big trees nearby because a coroner worried about them, calling them “dangerous.” This concern arose at the inquest after the death.
Experts, including an engineer and a police officer, agreed trees helped cause the crash. The coroner asked the council to make changes to help walkers and drivers.
The council listened to the coroner and assessed Embankment Road thoroughly. The 30 mph limit will stretch farther west, adding 800 meters on both sides of the road, starting near Stanley Place.
Trees grew too close to the road, making the sidewalk very narrow. Since widening the path or adding barriers between trees and road isn’t feasible, 25 trees will vanish from that area.
The tree removal avoids road closures. Eventually, the road needs full repair, a reconstruction spanning 450 meters. They’ll cut down trees during February break and replace them with new trees, but away from the road.
