Plymouth is selling a new housing estate, expected to fetch around £4 million. The council aims to further expand housing options in the area. The Broadland Gardens estate, located in Plymstock, features ten houses with prices starting at £355,000.

These houses occupy the former site of the Morley Youth Centre, which was demolished in 2018 after its closure. This development marks the council’s first housing construction project since 1983.

The council anticipates generating £4 million from the sales of these homes. Each of the ten homes is designed for energy efficiency and offers a range of sizes, including two, three, and four-bedroom layouts. Various styles are represented, from terrace and coach houses to semi-detached and detached options. A central green space enhances the community atmosphere. The original plan was to sell these homes on completion.

The revenue from the sales will be allocated to fund affordable housing initiatives in the local area. This new budget, totaling £7,977,853.09, is compiled from diverse sources. Contributions include Section 106 funds, Right to Buy receipts, empty homes loan repayments, and land sales, in addition to the funds from Broadland Gardens.

This investment will support the ongoing Plan for Homes, which has already facilitated the construction of over 7,500 homes. The Plan for Homes directly addresses the housing crisis and encourages the city’s overall growth.

Furthermore, the plan tackles wider housing needs and homelessness issues, establishing a comprehensive housing strategy for the future and supporting the Joint Local Plan. This latest investment, considered vital by all parties, supplements the existing £3.5 million in funds, bringing the total budget for the Plan for Homes to approximately £11.5 million.

Plymouth faces an urgent need for new housing developments. Economic challenges have exacerbated the existing housing crisis, leading to an increased demand for housing support. The council is actively working to address and alleviate these challenges through focused programs.
