A pharmacist was stealing drugs; he took diazepam and tramadol. Cameras caught him in the act as he was stealing from the pharmacies.

Gareth Parry, 44, worked as a pharmacist in south Wales. He stole prescription drugs during his shifts.

The thefts happened between February and March of last year. He stole diazepam in Swansea at Cwmfelin Pharmacy. He also stole from Morlais Medical Centre in Merthyr Tydfil where he took diazepam, temazepam, and tramadol. Additionally, he stole diazepam twice from the Co-Operative Pharmacy in Hirwaun.

Police searched Parry’s home and discovered many prescription drugs, but he still claimed he did nothing wrong. The thefts had earlier been reported.

Parry later admitted to theft from his employer. He also had past convictions, including shoplifting prescription drugs. He lied about his mom’s death, causing him to miss a meeting.

His lawyer said Parry understood his crime and had mental health issues after his marriage ended. He raised his child alone and took large amounts of diazepam. He used tramadol for rugby pain.

The lawyer mentioned Parry’s 25-year job history as a pharmacist, noting he knows he cannot do that job again. He now works for Amazon six days a week to help his son at school.

The judge said Parry broke their trust, making the crime serious and stating prison was possible if the drugs went to the streets.

Parry received a suspended jail sentence of 20 weeks, suspended for 18 months. He must complete 200 hours of unpaid work and 10 days of rehabilitation activity.
