Locals and MPs oppose a new childrens home in Peterlee, citing safety concerns due to its proximity to pubs and potential impact.

Atlas Children’s Homes wants to create this home at Shadforth Close, in a two-story house. Three young people, aged six to seventeen, with emotional and behavioral issues would live there.
A petition against the home has 84 signatures, and the council got 54 letters against it. Planning officers advise against building the home; Durham County Council will discuss it on February 11.
Neighbors think the home will upset their quiet area. Many older people live close by, and a pub is also nearby, so safety is a concern.
Susan McDonnell is a county councillor who worries the company lacks experience. She fears more anti-social behavior as a result and thinks the home is about money.
McDonnell wants the Council to reject the project and hopes the government will stop such “exploitation.” She says many similar cases exist.
Grahame Morris is Easington’s MP and opposes the plan, saying the company failed to consult the community. The location near pubs isn’t good for kids. He thinks the company wants profit above all.
They did not talk to the public or officials. This application may harm the community and might strain children’s services in Durham.
Atlas Children’s Homes says the home will be Ofsted registered, ensuring quality and transparency. This registration should assuage the planning authority and will help kids by providing a supportive place for children who need care.
The property could improve their lives. However, the council’s planning department still doubts the home’s safety and question its suitability for children and young people.
The proposed home is in an unsuitable area, says a report. Kids may face too much risk of crime there, and the council thinks it will not be safe.
