Homicides dropped last year by four percent. However, knife crimes went up four percent. Firearm offenses rose by nineteen percent. Robbery went up four percent. Shoplifting increased by twenty three percent.
A crime survey also came out recently. It uses interviews to measure crime. The survey estimates 9.5 million “headline” crimes. These include theft and robbery, fraud and violence.
The latest total is one million higher than last year. Fraud caused much of this increase. About 4.4 million people faced harassment. Around 2.2 million suffered domestic abuse. Stalkers targeted around 1.6 million people. Sexual assault affected 1.0 million.
