Saqib Ali, 29, faces charges. He allegedly hurt Pc Kidd in Walsall. The incident happened last year on February 24. Police taped off Reservoir Place.

A policeman cried in court. He remembered being crushed by a car and couldn’t see his legs. Pc Kidd was stuck between his van and Ali’s car on Reservoir Place on February 24 last year.

The suspect, Ali, is 29 years old. He supposedly drove at the officer to escape arrest, they say. Another officer smelled cannabis in the car.

Ali is on trial at Birmingham Crown Court. He denies harming and assaulting anyone. The trial continues.

Pc Kidd testified on February 26 that he saw Pc Bull struggling with the driver, who was being difficult. He heard the car’s engine start and begin revving loudly. Ali reached for the wheel or ignition, said Kidd, and warned Bull the driver might go.

Kidd got emotional and said the car crushed him. He was between the cars as it moved and had nowhere to move. The Astra was near the van and lurched forward quickly, estimated to be five to ten metres.

The engine sounded like racing with excessive revving, he said. He pleaded to release his legs, but couldn’t see the gap or his legs. The pain was awful, and he banged and pleaded.

The incident took about 40 seconds, but felt like minutes to Kidd. Ali backed up and freed him. Kidd feared another crash, fell to the floor, and feared for his life.

He had leg and foot injuries. A paramedic said his height may have saved him. Kidd worked for the police for 19 years and recently returned to work from the incident.

He became upset again in court and avoided going back to Walsall, stating that too many things remind him. Pc Bull had cuts and bruises and was dragged when the car moved.

The court learned Ali was Tasered, yet he still drove off. Police arrested him the next day. The prosecutor said Ali may claim accident, saying his foot slipped off the clutch.

Ali, from Erdington, pleaded not guilty. He denies harming Pc Kidd on purpose and also denies harming Pc Bull.
