A tradesman defrauded North Yorkshire homeowners of £25k for work he never completed, landing him in jail.

Sean Berry ran SB Electrical Security and Solutions Limited. His company was based out of Stokesley. Trading Standards investigated him due to six complaints. People in several towns reported issues, including Easingwold and Whitby.
Berry took deposits for electrical work and solar panel installations. He requested up to 50% upfront for materials. He never started the work, supplied the materials, and customers did not receive refunds.
One victim felt disillusioned with tradespeople because of Berry’s actions. The victim felt manipulated and lied to, and they were glad justice was served.
Berry was sentenced at York Crown Court on Wednesday, February 26. North Yorkshire Council’s trading standards officers investigated, and he admitted to fraud and unfair trading.
Berry received a prison sentence of two years and eight months. The sentences for each charge ran concurrently. He also cannot be a company director for ten years and received one extra day for missing a prior hearing.
Trading Standards sees more similar scams and warns the public to be cautious. A council member advises traders to communicate honestly, set achievable timelines, or offer repayment plans because ignoring customers worsens the situation.
